In addition to the above series distributed by the various corporate entities which produced OKeh records there were a number of private recordings or “Specials” produced (mainly by General Phonograph Corp. in the period 1920-1926) which while recorded and manufactured by OKeh had no distribution through OKeh dealers and were instead for the personal use or distribution of the client. The client was in some cases a private individual and in other cases a regional outlet (often a music store).
These “Specials” are little known and poorly documented and there were certainly more produced than those listed in this volume. Since distribution was usually extremely limited or non-existent, and was, at best, through a single outlet or within a single regional location, they are all quite rare and there is no way of knowing how many such special pressings there may be. Those known and listed in this volume are credited to the client or distributor either prominently or elsewhere on the label below the OKeh logo. The label design varies, although some client pressings are similar in appearance to contemporary OKeh records and often (but not always) there is a manufacturer credit to the General Phonograph Corporation, New York.
Known “Specials” include Ambassador Record, Beacham Record, Buffalo Record, Burke Record, Creath Record, Cruz Record, Fattey Record, Geake Record, Hello World, Martha Lee Record, Memphis Record, Morrison Record, Nealy Record, Rambler’s Record, Rational Rhythm, Scott Record, Special Record, Sunshine, Sunshine Gospel Record, Thompson Record, and Westfield Band Inc.
