Appendix C: Phantom Matrix Numbers (1901)

Columbia Master Book, Volume I, Tim Brooks, ed.

During 1901-1902 a crudely handwritten number which differed from the normal matrix sometimes appeared in the wax on Climax discs. Although its exact purpose is not known, I have dubbed it a “phantom” matrix number as it appears to denote recordings obtained from another source and integrated into Climax/Columbia’s main numbering system. Known “phantom” numbers are listed on the following page for the benefit of researchers.

Since Climax did not generally number takes, sizes and artist codes are provided as an aid in identifying specific recordings. See the main listings for full details.

A few of these numbers, especially those “buffed off” or “scratched out,” may be simple renumbering; however most appear to reflect a genuine second number. Two patterns should be noted: (1) All examples appear to be on Climax or Climax-derived recordings. More than one-third of these discs (including two of the four Columbias) have the letters “VTM” stamped in the wax, which indicates that the matrices were in production during the brief period when the Victor Talking Machine Co. owned Climax, from mid-January to mid-February, 1902; (2) In most cases different numbers were assigned to 7” and 10” versions of the same title, although in one (403) the 7” and 10” bear the same number. In addition, one 10” (392) has been reported with different “phantom” numbers on two different copies.

Further discussion will be found in the Columbia History section.
