Notes
Brooks/Rust note: Matrixes 1109 A through L, advertised in the catalog as "An evening with the minstrels," presented an entire minstrel show, including introductory overture, jokes, vocalist, olio (specialty acts), and grand finale. Unlike most minstrel records of this period, each disc did not open with "Gentlemen, be seated" and an overture; instead the records were intended to be played sequentially, with the acts flowing naturally from disc to disc, producing the effect of a continuous show. Comprising approximately half an hour of total playing time, the 12-disc set was a landmark of early recording.
The Discography of American Historical Recordings aims to comprehensively document the history of early commercial sound recordings. Objectionable and racist content does not reflect the values of the University or its staff. Further information is available here.
